I wish I was an earth-mother, really I do.  Instead my kids are saddled with a type A personality, suburban professional as a mum.  One reason I travel with my kids is a recognition of what I don’t offer them in our daily lives.  Funnily enough it is the simple things they miss out on – time getting dirty and time with animals (I’m not an animal person so no pets for us) being the ones that spring to mind.  Farm stays offer us a temporary reprieve from these limitations.

This is the first installment in a Tasmania series sharing what we discovered about southern Tasmania on a recent trip.  Eden farm stay, in the majestic Huon Valley was one of the highlights. At Eden, for the price of a hotel room we stayed in a three bedroom farm house.  The first thing that excited the kids was the large, fenced play area complete with an old sail boat to play pirates on, and a free ranging bunny for my youngest to chase.

The accommodation itself is attractive, comfortable and cosy.  What excited me about Eden farm stay was the lengths that hosts Matt and Jo had gone to to make it appealing to families with young kids.  There were plenty of toys and games for the kids, coloring-in gear was kept in a drawer dedicated to the purpose, we were supplied with a cot and high chair, and I noticed the detail that had been made to child-proofing the accommodation from a safety perspective. As someone who has recently required a wheelchair I noticed that the home is set up for those with mobility difficulties.

Each evening Matt feeds the animals, and the kids were invited to join in.  Onsite they have alpacas, chooks, turkeys, pigs, rabbits and goats.  For my animal mad three year old this was heaven. Situated among a scenic apple orchard I was surprised at how enthusiastic my kids were to pick the apples.  Even my fruit and vegie phobic five year old went picking every morning, and loved chewing on the juicy golden delicious apples straight from the tree (okay – he didn’t swallow the fruit but at least it is a start towards normal eating).

Eden farm stay is an easy 45 minute drive from Hobart, past orchards and honesty boxes.  The charming town of Cygnet is three minutes down the road and offers some nice cafe dining opportunities.   We were supplied by our hosts with simple supplies for breakfast including fresh laid eggs. Located ideally to explore Tasmania’s south; Bruny Island, Tahune Air Walk and Hobart are all a convenient distance for day or half day trips.

Note:  There are unfenced dams on the property so young children need to be supervised at all times by adults.

  1. It’s true what you say at the top – that’s one reason we travel as well.

As for the farm stay – this is what we were looking for last time, although it turns out my sister is an earth mother, chickens, backyard orchards and all, so it wasn’t necessary in the end. But next time, if the youngest two can’t get along better, we’ll head out to Cygnet. Lovely country – we had a bit of an explore and loved it.

    • I think having a sister with chickens and backyard orchards is pretty great. The countryside there is lovely – I really want to try and get back to explore the Huon Valley further.
