Friday Photo – The Cairns Tropical Zoo

The scariest gardening job in the world?

The scariest gardening job in the world?

We stumbled across this scene on a recent trip to the Cairns Tropical Zoo.  What amazed me was not only that the gardener was in the enclosure with the giant crocodile, but that he was listening to music and paying the croc not the slightest attention.

A visit to the Cairns Tropical Zoo is one of my kid’s favourite activities – they ask to go all the time.  Smaller than big city zoos it is the perfect size for families with small kids to explore.  An emphasis on Australian animals is complemented with some international exhibits.

Do look up show times on the internet before you visit.  The snake show, pelican feeding and Birds of Prey show are definitely worth catching.  Also, plan to arrive early so that the kangaroos and wallabies are hungry.

The Cairns Tropical Zoo is open from 8.30-4pm.  It is located on the Cook Highway at Palm Cove, just north of Cairns.
