Getting grubby. Our first farm-stay.

Milking a cow. Mowbray Park farmstay

I decided early into our break at Mowbray Park farmstay that it was time to put the wipes away.  It was during our first activity – a tractor ride and damper making around a campsite.   Initially, as fast as those black marks from bits of charcoal around the fire made their way onto little hands and faces, I would wipe them off.  Then, as brown marks from sitting in the dirt began to appear on my boy’s pants I surrendered.  It turns out,  surrendering to grime was exactly what this family needed.

I hadn’t realised just how urbanised we are.  We don’t live in a big city after all.  However I am not an animal person, and my first foray into gardening, tending to some carrot seedlings in a pot is proving to be less than a success.  The truth is, if my children are ever to learn about such things they will not learn about them from me, which is why I took them on a farmstay at historic Mowbray Park near Picton in New South Wales.

Mowbray Park

What I loved about our Mowbray Park farmstay, only an hour south of Sydney was that they offered so many structured activities (and as a mother to two wild boys how I love structure!)  My four year old had one task he wanted to complete – collecting chicken eggs.  He was able to do that however the boys also had the opportunity to milk a cow, ride a pony and meet a host of young farm animals in the animal nursery.  Our accommodation, in Mowbray Park’s Majellan Lodge more than met our needs.  As the tariff was all inclusive we had the benefit of homestyle meals including a delicious farm breakfast.  The added bonus – during school holidays, for an extra, modest price Mowbray Park conducts a kids club, so the boys attended the children’s dinner and then ascended the stairs to a well equipped, supervised playroom while my parents, who had joined us for the weekend and I enjoyed an adult dinner in peace.

The testimony to the success of the farmstay was that Bub 1, who is currently being treated by us for a DVD addition and is always looking forward to the next adventure did not want to leave.

  1. Hi Danielle, Sounds like the perfect family holiday. The kids would love the animals and they even had a kid’s club. Nothing like a child free dinner to unwind.
