Heide Museum of Modern Art’s sculpture park. A Melbourne outdoor art space.

I don’t know much about art but I do know that outdoor art spaces are a wonderful place for my children to learn about colour and shape.   One of my favourite outdoor art spaces is the sculpture park at Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne’s east.  Located among leafy green parkland near the Yarra River in the suburb of Bulleen are over thirty sculptures by predominantly (but not all) Australian artists.

A visit to this sculpture garden on a sunny day is pure magic.  I was interested that my children required no explanation of the various forms.  Rather they were content to explore and engage with the sculptures on their own terms.  In contrast to visiting an art gallery with small children, where I sometimes feel like the noise police, children are able to run and play around the sculptures in the park.

The park, in addition to hosting the sculptures is gloriously landscaped and has a picturesque veggie garden through which to wander.

A visit to the Heide Museum of Modern Art’s sculpture park is free (yay!).  There is onsite, upmarket dining at Café Vue Heide where children’s lunch boxes may be purchased.   Alternatively you may wish to take a picnic or barbeque to enjoy at the adjacent Banksia park that also has playground facilities.

The Heide Museum of Modern Art is located at 7 Templestowe Road in Bulleen, 20 minutes drive from Melbourne city.

The Heide Museum of Modern Art is open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm and is closed on Mondays.

  1. This looks like a great outdoor museum. There are some wonderful pieces here. You’re so right that places like these allow kids to have so much more freedom than the indoor museums. There’s plenty of spaces to run around and they can make all the noise they want. You can’t beat free either 🙂
