Jurassic World the Exhibition at Melbourne Museum

Australia has never seen anything like Jurassic World.  More immersive theme park experience than museum exhibition visitors are transported to Isla Nublar as VIP guests where they meet a host of dinosaurs including Brachiosaurus and Tyrannosaurus rex.  And I really do mean you meet a host of dinosaurs.  This family has been pretty blessed when it comes to animatronic meet and greets.  While our robotic dinosaur friends are often interesting, and cool for kids, I’ve never been able to describe them as life-like before.  The dinosaurs of Jurassic World the Exhibition seem real.  Not blink, squint and look sideways kind of real.  More what the freak kind of planet are we living on kind of real.   The reality of the dinosaurs affected my kids in a variety of ways.  My seven year old who is a little too cool for school and not the slightest bit interested in dinosaurs loved the exhibition.  The realism and excitement of the dinosaurs took him in despite himself and created a new fan.  My five year old, dinosaur loving son was in heaven.  My two year old alas was terrified.  At one stage as the Tyrannosaurus rex was rampaging and tipping over a car I thought I may be traumatising my daughter for life.  I mean, it really was as if we were under a life size angry Tyrannosaurus rex.  While I am happy to say she seems to have recovered from her ordeal it leads me to the first point of this review.  While I can’t recommend a visit to Jurassic World the Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum highly enough, a caveat to this recommendation is that for kids under four this really isn’t the right dinosaur experience.

In terms of educational content there is real depth to the exhibition however the excitement of the experience did mean we didn’t spend as much time reflecting on the educational perspective as we would at a regular museum exhibition.  I think this is okay though as it is Jurassic World the Exhibition’s unmuseum like quality that I believe will capture a new audience that previously hasn’t engaged with the museum.

As for other advice – well, if visiting Jurassic World the Exhibition with kids it is worth taking them to the toilet before you enter the Exhibition as there are no amenities inside.  Be prepared for some pretty hefty priced souvenirs as you exit too – and also be prepared to want to cough up for a souvenir because the experience is so just so much more awesome than most museum experiences.

The Museum has some pretty weighty partners in Jurassic World the Exhibition including Virgin Australia and the Victorian State Government.  Which begs the question, whether it is worth a family trip to Melbourne to see the exhibition?  I am going to say yes to this one.  As a memorable family event, a weekend in Melbourne with a visit to Jurassic World the Exhibition a focus is a winner.
