The Food Truck Park in Preston. Hip Melbourne dining with kids.

Never again, we decided would we chose our family dining venues based on the presence of a playground.  That was our dining out tactic for our first years of parenthood and the result was more dodgy chicken schnitzels than I can count.  An indoor-outdoor dining venue in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Preston ticks all our new family dining resolutions. The Food Truck Park, an initiative of the mobile food industry organisational body is the perfect place to take the kids as the weather warms up in Melbourne.  Great food – tick, provided by a rotating selection of food trucks.  Early opening time to cater for hungry, tired kiddos – tick,  5pm.  A fun atmosphere that engages the adult and mini members of our family – tick.

Dining at the Food Truck Park in an inherently casual and festive affair.  Fake turf under feet, party lighting overhead and a latin soundtrack over the loudspeaker created a vacation atmosphere.  On the evening we dined the food of three continents were represented.  My picky eater chicken nugget loving kids were delighted with their chicken breast popcorn chicken and soft serve ice-cream.  The adults in our party went a little overboard sampling the food truck meals dining on an amazing brisket Po’ Boy sandwich, calamari tacos and the most decadent Nutella donut ever created.  You get the drift?  All appetites catered for meant one happy family.

While there wasn’t a playground in sight there was a retro 80s arcade game (free!), a ping pong table, foos ball and giant chess.  The kids were indeed happy.
