Travel quick tip – traveling with a newborn

My son’s teacher asked me the other day how I was going after the birth of our third child.  My answer was “Have you seen the tv show the Walking Dead?  Well it’s a bit like that at our house right now”.  I was referring to the zombiesque twilight that new mums dwell in as a consequence of profound sleep deprivation with a newborn. Thankfully my beautiful baby girl is sleeping a little better now, managing to space her feeds a little at night.  This win has come as a result of a variety of sleep aids resorted to intermittently depending on the success of moment.  Pacifier, baby carrier, tight swaddling, and rocking of the bassinets being the most successful.

When we celebrate Easter in a couple of weeks, on what will be our first getaway as a family of five I am pulling no punches when it comes to sleep.  Rather than taking our regular porta cot with us, or relying on whatever our accommodation provides I will be hiring a bassinet that allows me to rock her to sleep if need be.  This is a small financial investment to allow us to enjoy the holiday together.  Needless to say the baby carrier, pacifier and swaddles will also be coming with us.  A variety of companies hire bassinets around Australia.  We have used “Hire for Baby” in the past and have been happy with them (I have no relationship with this company) and they even hire rocking chairs for families with bubs that are soothed to sleep best that way.
