Beautiful Birds at Birdworld Kuranda

Eclectus Parrots at Birdworld Kuranda

It is about time this blog shined some light on the unique village of Kuranda.  Located 40 minutes drive from Cairns, Kuranda is situated among World Heritage listed Wet Tropics rainforest.  The township is blessed with an abundance of activities to enjoy with children.  Today’s feature highlights the charming Birdworld Kuranda, located in the Heritage Markets section of town.   Visitors to Birdworld Kuranda are able to interact with nearly 80 species of birds in a beautiful rainforest enclosure.  I wasn’t sure how my two little boys (aged 2 and 4) would cope with the free flight immersion experience as brilliantly coloured birds flocked to our feed.  I needn’t have worried.  Although both boys were too timid to feed the birds by hand they delighted in getting close as the birds perched on others (mainly myself).  One cheeky Amazonian Macaw perched on my head for 10 minutes and proceeded to misappropriate my hairpins.  The other stars of Birdworld Kuranda are the endangered Cassowaries (the heaviest birds in the world).  These birds, which are potentially dangerous to humans were separated from the main enclosure by a fence however we loved viewing them.

This is a fantastic attraction for young children, and equally enjoyable for parents.  Entry for adults is $16.50 and $8.25 for children (those under 4 are free) making it one of the more economical attractions for families in North Queensland.  There is a small charge for bird feed.  Families also have the option of package their entry to Birdworld Kuranda with entry to other great family wildlife experiences; Kuranda Koala Gardens and the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.

Kuranda is accessible from Cairns by car on a sealed road.  Other options are to take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

    • Hi Terumi – they just landed there. I was waiting to see what would happen if one landed on my children but they seemed to prefer my adult head:)
