Five easy dishes to cook over a campfire with kids

How many of you are going camping this Easter?  These five dishes are super easy to cook with kids over a campfire whether you are away camping, or having a staycation overnight camp in your own back yard.  Many thanks to CYC – one of our favourite camping organisations for the dish inspiration.

S’MORES CONES

An Ice cream cone, marshmallows,  chocolate and aluminium foil is all you need for this dish.   Fill an ice-cream code (the waffle cones are the best) with chocolate and marshmallows, wrap in foil and put on the fire for a couple of minutes only

HAM & CHEESE CROISSANTS

Great for breakfast or lunch.  Take some croissants – you can purchase these from the grocery store or a bakery.  Fill them with ham and cheese, wrap them in foil and put them on the fire for around 5 minutes.

BAKED POTATOES

Cut a hole in the potato in the potato and fill it with bacon, cheese, corn, chives, or anything that works well in a loaded baked potato.  Wrap it in foil and put it on the fire for around half an hour.

BANANA BOATS

Slice down the middle of a banana but not all the way down, the banana should open to be filled with chocolate and marshmallows. Wrap it in foil and put it on the fire for around 5 minutes only.

BAKED APPLES WITH NUTELLA

Get an apple,  and take the core out of the apple leaving the bottom of the apple in place.  Fill the hole where the core was with nutella, wrap it in foil and put it on the fire to bake for 30 to 35 minutes.   An alternate filling can be made with sultanas, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon.  Don’t be put off if the outside of the apple is charred, scoop out the sweet cooked apple and filling in delicious mouthfuls anyway.

Damper with flair

You may have gotten the impression from these dishes that marshmallows and chocolate go well when thrown on a fire.  Fancy up the traditional damper by adding some marshmallows and chocolate to the dough.  Served with cream this is a delicious campfire dessert.

Disclaimer:  You may notice my maths does not add up – there are six dishes listed here.  This is because my sister told me I should have included damper – and I love her so I added it later.
