The 2017 Melbourne Winter School Holidays guide

They’re here!  Melbourne’s chilly winter school holidays.  Thankfully there is loads to do to keep the kids entertained.

Bug Lab; Little Bugs Super Powers at the Melbourne Museum

Instil a sense of wonder in nature at Bug Lab, newly opened at the Melbourne Museum.  This  interactive exhibition features six large-scale bugs – Orchid MantisBombardier Beetle, Jewel Wasp, Dragonfly, Japanese Honeybees and Katipō (New Zealand’s most dangerous native spider) – Bug Lab lifts the lid on the genius of bugs, which over millions of years have evolved to have superpower-like abilities, including camouflage, mind control, super speed, swarm intelligence and deadly venom.  We were fortunate enough to be at the opening of this exhibition and it was amazing.  Bugs are gross, clever, adaptive and alien like all at once – there is so much for kids to love

Disney on Ice presents Frozen

Disney on Ice presents Frozen coming to Hisense Arena 5th-9th July and an EXTRA weekend of shows on 22nd and 23rd July. Visit www.disneyonice.com.au for all show details.  Enter a fantastical winter wonderland beyond imagination at Disney On Ice presents Frozen. The heartwarming Academy Award®-winning tale you love is now a full length story LIVE on Ice and skating into your town. Join royal sisters Anna and Elsa, the hilarious snowman Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven as they journey to discover that true love is the most magical power of all!

Van Gogh and The Seasons at the NGV

Van Gogh and the Seasons

If heading in to the NGV to experience Van Gogh and The Seasons I would recommend booking your tickets in advance and hitting the exhibition EARLY – ideally at opening time.  This is a spectacular exhibition but very popular with Melbourne’s adult set and little eyes can find it difficult to view Van Gogh’s masterpieces in the crowd.  Alternatively, if your child does not do well in crowds pick up a copy of Van Gough and the Seasons an Art Book for Kids online for child focused learning about the artist and his work.

New V Junior Cinema opened at Fountain Gate shopping Centre.

Village Cinema’s flagship concept for children – their V-Junior brand has opened a second cinema for kids in Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.  Who doesn’t love a movie over the school holidays?  A movie in a movie cinema with playtime before, a slide in the cinema and children’s menu is just so much more fun.

Lighttime – Illuminate your eyes ears and mind at science works.

A stunning new experience, fusing science and art will open this week at Scienceworks. Eleven experimental artists are creating an immersive experience with other-worldly aesthetic and dramatic optical illusions, expected to draw new audiences of adults and teens as well as families.

Get icy

The Variety Iceslide at Southbank

There are a number of locations to embrace the cold whole-heartedly in Melbourne these school holidays:

The Variety Ice Slide presented by the Eureka Skydeck.  No wet weather gear is required to enjoy the ice slide open from Saturday July 1st to Sunday July 16 with tickets available for purchase on site.

Skate Slide Chill is open at the Common Man South Wharf June 1- August 31 and includes an undercover ice rink and toboggan slide

River Rink will be open again at Federation Square from 1-23rd July.  I advise pre-booking for this one to avoid disappointment.

Big Freeze Festival will be on 1-9th July at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre.  With 9 festival zones including snow play, an ice slide and snow globe photo booth.

Out of Town

In the Great Ocean Road town of Warrnambool the amazing Fun4Kids Festival is being held July 3rd till 7th.  Including both interactive experiences and performances by kids performers such as Jimmy Giggle and Lah Lah’s Big Live Band the festival is a winner.

From July 1-30 Winter Wonderlights will be on show at Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill bringing Christmas in July alive both day and night.

  1. This is great Dani. These posts are now getting me excited to actually doing something with the boys rather than working on the business. Thanks for sending this through, even though it was via Glenn.
